Essential Depot's sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, lye, or a substitute for Red Devil Lye, is proudly made in the U.S.A. and is Food Grade, unlike the technical grade sold by most competitors. This means it is lower in impurities.

Our sodium hydroxide is FOOD GRADE, USP, non-GMO, and does not contribute to BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). It has not been animal tested since 1990. Additionally, it is Kosher, as the chlorine used in its manufacture does not come into contact with any animal products or byproducts, nor does it contain chemical additives that are organic in nature. It is also Halal Acceptable, as it does not contain alcohol, natural L-cysteine extracted from hair or feathers, animal fats and/or extracts, blood, blood plasma, or meat byproducts.

SDS and/or COA are available upon request. All products are shipped in easy-to-store and easy-to-use resealable containers that are BPA Free HDPE with a resealable child-resistant cap. Each container ships 1 lb of lye.

Our sodium hydroxide is perfect for making pretzels, bagels, soda bread, olives, lutefish, hominy, and for cleaning wine/beer tanks/casks, beer lines, and thickening ice cream. Use caution when purchasing drain openers from other suppliers, as they often contain additional harmful chemicals.
